1.What is Vitamin E?
Definition:
Vit E, also known as tocopherol, is a fat-soluble vitamin that comes in eight different forms, including alpha, beta, gamma, and delta-tocopherol and alpha, beta, gamma, and delta-tocotrienol. All forms are biologically active. However, the only one used by the human body being alpha-tocopherol.
Vit E is a potent antioxidant essential for health and protects cells from oxidative stress while also regulating immune function and maintaining normal coagulation. In a glass-lined reactor, 2,3,6 trimethyl phenol is sulfonated.
Trimethyl quinone is formed after the sulfonated product is oxidized.
Sodium dithionite is used to reduce the quinone to trimethyl hydroquinone.
The dried hydroquinone is condensed with isophytol to produce tocopherol, then acetylated and distilled to produce pure Vit E.
