What Is Glycyrrhizic Acid?

Glycyrrhizic acid powder is derived from the roots and rhizomes of licorice, a leguminous plant, and is the main active ingredient in licorice, with a content of about 10%. Glycyrrhizic acid, also known as glycyrrhizin and glycyrrhizin, is a glycoside composed of glycyrrhetinic acid and 2 molecules of glucuronic acid. White to light yellow crystalline powder, odorless, with a specific sweetness, the sweetness is about 200 times that of sucrose. Its sweetness is different from sweeteners such as sucrose. It takes a while to have a sweet taste after the entrance, but it lasts for a long time. A small amount of liquiritin and sucrose can use 20% less sucrose without changing the sweetness. Although it has no fragrance, it has fragrance-enhancing effect. The aqueous solution is weakly acidic, and the pH value of 2% solution is 2.5~3.5. Insoluble in water, dilute ethanol. Soluble in hot water, it becomes viscous jelly after cooling. Glycyrrhizic acid is a triterpene saponin. In addition, there are liquiritin, isoliquiritin and so on. Glycyrrhiza sp., a leguminous plant, is an important traditional Chinese medicine. It is used in 74 of the 110 prescriptions in "Treatise on Febrile Diseases". It is extracted from licorice and has a special sweet taste. It is mainly used in food, and it is also used in other industries such as medicine, cosmetics and cigarettes. Because glycyrrhizic acid is often accompanied by pseudoaldosteronism in clinical application, experts have carried out a large number of chemical synthesis and structural modification of it, and glycyrrhizic acid derivatives have a wide range of clinical applications.

What Are The Benefits?

Anti-Inflammatory
Glycyrrhizic acid powder has a clear anti-inflammatory mechanism, which can inhibit the metabolic level of phospholipase A2/arachidonic acid (PLA2/AA), NF-κB and MAPK/AP-1 key inflammatory response signals induced by inflammatory stimuli in the initial stage , inhibit the activity of inflammatory response signals related to the three inflammatory pathways, down-regulate the upstream related pro-inflammatory cytokines of inflammatory pathways, including TNF-α, IL-8, IL-1β, IIL-6, related chemokines and cyclooxygenase (COX) expression, blocking downstream inflammatory pathways, including nitric oxide (NO), prostaglandin (PG) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation.
Anti-Oxidation

Antiviral
There are six steps in the replication process of most viruses, namely adsorption, invasion, uncoating, biosynthesis, assembly and release. Liver Protection
Studies have found that glycyrrhizic acid also exhibits good hepatoprotective activity in some hepatitis animal models. In lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and D-galactosamine (GalN)-induced liver injury, glycyrrhizic acid was able to completely inhibit IL18-induced ALT increase. Glycyrrhizin can alleviate liver microcirculation-induced liver injury (histology, liver enzymes) and reduce hepatocyte apoptosis by reducing microcirculation changes and preventing endothelin interaction. Its hepatoprotective effect.

Anti-Ulcer Effect: Glycyrrhizic acid has a protective effect on digestive tract ulcers. It can increase the mucus secretion of the gastric wall mucosa, form a protective barrier, and reduce the damage of gastric acid to the gastric wall. Therefore, glycyrrhizic acid is often used in traditional Chinese medicine to relieve allergic rhinitis, urticaria and other allergic diseases.

Lowering Blood Pressure: Glycyrrhizic acid has a certain effect on lowering blood pressure. It blocks the synthesis and release of adrenaline (a substance that raises blood pressure), regulates blood vessel tone, and lowers blood pressure levels. Therefore, glycyrrhizic acid is often used in traditional Chinese medicine to treat hypertension and cardiovascular disease.

What Are The Application Directions?

The application ratio of glycyrrhizic acid in various industries is as follows: 26% for pharmaceuticals and cosmetics, 70% for food, 4% for cigarettes and others.
In Terms Of Food:
1. Soy sauce: In addition to improving the salty taste to enhance the inherent taste of soy sauce, glycyrrhizic acid can also eliminate the bitter taste of saccharin and have a synergistic effect on chemical flavoring agents.
2. Pickles: In the brine method of pickling pickles with saccharin, the bitterness of saccharin can be eliminated. In the process of pickling, it can overcome the shortcomings of fermentation failure, discoloration and hardening caused by adding less sugar.
3. Seasoning: This product can be added with pickling seasoning liquid, seasoning powder or temporary seasoning when eating, which can increase the sweetness and reduce the strange smell of other chemical seasonings.

Glycyrrhizic Acid powder

Process Flow For Extracting Glycyrrhizic Acid From Licorice
1. Pulverization: Take the roots and stems of licorice and pulverize them in a pulverizer, and pass through a 20-mesh sieve for later use.
2. Extraction: Take 200kg of the above-mentioned licorice coarse powder, put it into a 2000L enamel reaction kettle, add 1200kg of water, slowly heat up to 85-100°C, stir and extract for 2 hours, filter, add 1000kg of water to the filter residue, and extract twice according to the above method , combined 3 filtrates.
3. Concentration: Pump the extract into an enamel evaporator for concentration, and when it is concentrated to 1/5 of the original volume, filter it while it is hot.
4. Separation: Cool the filtrate to room temperature and add 95% ethanol to make the ethanol content in the extract reach 65%, let stand for 24 hours, then filter to remove vegetable protein and polysaccharide.
5. Precipitation: Take the licorice filtrate, put it into the sedimentation tank, add concentrated sulfuric acid to adjust the pH=3, and the glycyrrhizic acid will precipitate out, filter, wash twice with deionized water, and then vacuum dry.
6. Refining: Add 3 times the amount of acetone to the glycyrrhizinic acid precipitation, heat and reflux for extraction for 3 hours, filter, and reflow the residue for 2 times, combine the reflux extracts for 3 times, filter, recover acetone, and obtain the wet product of glycyrrhizic acid.
7. Drying: Put the wet product of dried oxalic acid into the drying room to dry, start to control the temperature at 45°C, dry for 1 hour, slowly raise the temperature to 85-95°C, and when it is about to dry, raise the temperature to 100°C, and finally bake at 105°C for 5 minutes .
8. Pulverization: put the dried glycyrrhizic acid into a pulverizer to pulverize, and pass through a 60-80 mesh sieve to obtain glycyrrhizic acid powder.
