Tetracaine hydrochloride (CAS: 136-47-0) is a potent long-acting ester local anesthetic. Synthesized via acylation of 2-diethylaminoethanol with p-aminobenzoic acid derivatives, its molecular formula is C15H24N2O2. It functions by blocking sodium channels to inhibit nerve impulse conduction.
Contraindicated in patients with sulfite allergies or known hypersensitivity to ester anesthetics. Store in cool, dry conditions below 25°C away from light. Strict dosage control is required to prevent systemic toxicity and methemoglobinemia.
