Platycodon Grandiflorum is a genus of platycodon in the family Platycodon, distributed in China, Korean Peninsula, Japan and eastern Siberia. As an ornamental flower, its roots are often pickled as pickles in northeast China, and used to make kimchi in the Korean Peninsula. Its roots are also used as medicine in traditional Chinese medicine, with functions of relieving cough and expectanant, reducing blood sugar, anti-inflammatory, inhibiting gastric juice secretion and anti-ulcer.
Balloonflower Root Extract is a botanical ingredient derived from Platycodon grandiflorus, processed via water or ethanol extraction. The primary active constituent is Platycodin D, though the extract itself lacks a single molecular formula as it is a complex mixture.
